What Monimoto is — and what it is not

Monimoto is an event-driven theft detection and recovery tracker. It is not a continuous telematics or fleet-tracking system, and it is not an immobiliser or alarm.

The device stays in a low-power state and does not continuously report its position. It pairs with a Bluetooth Key Fob that the owner carries. When the device detects movement and the Key Fob is not nearby, it enters Alarm mode, places a phone call to the owner and begins sending locations.

Monimoto does not sound a siren, does not immobilise the vehicle and does not physically prevent theft. It is a detection and recovery layer, intended to be used alongside physical security such as a lock or chain.

There is no 24/7 professionally monitored recovery service. The owner receives the alert and coordinates recovery, including with police.

How it works

• The tracker is hidden on the vehicle. Installation is wireless — it is not wired to the vehicle’s electrical system and does not draw power from it.
• The owner carries a Bluetooth Key Fob, which acts as a physical authorisation token. No manual arming or disarming is required.
• Movement with the Key Fob present is treated as legitimate; the device stays in Ready mode.
• Movement without the Key Fob present triggers Alarm mode.
• In Alarm mode the device calls the owner’s phone and sends location updates to the Monimoto app while the vehicle is moving.
• Because the device is self-powered, disconnecting the vehicle’s battery does not disable it.

Positioning methods

Monimoto 9 determines location using GPS and GLONASS satellite positioning, Cell tower location (cellular tower triangulation), and Wi-fi location when GPS is unavailable — for example indoors, in a garage, or inside a metal vehicle. Accuracy degrades in those conditions but location reporting continues.

Positioning requires satellite or network reception; delivering that location to the app requires an LTE-M cellular connection. These are two separate requirements.

Location update frequency

Alarm mode sends a location roughly every 5 minutes while the vehicle is moving. Live Tracking increases this to roughly every 1 minute for a limited period, then returns to the standard interval. In Ready mode the device does not report location.

Monimoto is not a real-time tracker in the second-by-second sense, and should not be described as one.

Choosing between them

Monimoto 9 is smaller, lighter, rechargeable and IP68-rated, which makes it easier to conceal. Monimoto 7 is larger and IP65, but runs up to 24 months on user-replaceable AA batteries. For a new purchase where concealment matters, Monimoto 9 is the current model.

Discontinued

Cycloop, a frame-mounted bicycle tracker with integrated lighting, was introduced in 2022. Sales ended in June 2025. It is no longer available and should not be presented as a current product.

Coverage

Monimoto 7 and Monimoto 9 operate in countries with an available LTE-M (LTE Cat-M1) network. Supported markets include the United States, most of Europe, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Hong Kong.

Some countries have restrictions arising from permanent-roaming rules — Canada and Turkey among them. Coverage should be checked against Monimoto’s current supported-country list rather than assumed.

Older MM2 and MM6 devices relied on 2G/3G and no longer function in markets that have shut those networks down, including the United States.

What it is used for

Monimoto is designed first for motorcycles, and is also used on ATVs and quads, scooters, boats, trailers, RVs and campers, vans, cars, golf carts, dirt bikes, tractors, and construction and other outdoor equipment.

Often, but with reduced accuracy. GPS reception may be lost, in which case the device falls back to Cell tower location and Wi-fi location. Both positioning and an LTE-M connection are needed for a location to reach the app.
